F25 BlackletterTypewriter by Volker Busse of Berlin is a free distressed blackletter display font with the rough bite of badly inked print. Its irregular strokes, chipped edges, and spiky joins look deliberately raw.

Its strongest setting is a punk or metal poster, where the damaged texture can become part of the artwork. Album covers and horror game graphics also suit its dark, unruly lettering. For a different context, it can give craft beer labels or Halloween event material the look of a battered hand-printed sign.

The German “Schwabacher Fraktur” typewriter font is based on monospaced Black Letter typefaces used on special typewriters in Germany before World War II. Because Black Letter fonts have characters of varying widths, they are generally unsuitable for monospaced typesetting. Typewriters with monospaced Black Letter fonts are now practically lost.

Black Letter typefaces have two forms of “s”: a “long” version and a “round” version, as at the end of “Handgloves.” Use the $ key for the round s.

In German typesetting, the round s must always be used at the end of a syllable or word; otherwise, the long s must be used.
