FHA Condensed French Shade NC by The Fontry, Michael Adkins, and James Striling is a free old-school shaded display font with extremely narrow, high-contrast letters. Fine inner cuts create a crisp engraved effect across the alphabet.

Fashion packaging and theatrical posters are very different settings, but both suit its tall silhouette, sweeping curves, and dramatic light-and-shadow treatment. It also fits vintage-inspired event programs, ornate restaurant menus, and music graphics that favor refined lettering over rough nostalgia. In those uses, the inset strokes can become part of an illustrated border, theatrical marquee, or decorative storefront sign rather than serving as neutral text.

At some point, sign painters adapted Condensed French and made their own modifications. At the end of the nineteenth century, Frank H. Atkinson included Condensed French in his lettering samples in Sign Painting, A Complete Manual.

In 1999, Mike Adkins digitized Condensed French for the Atkinson collection. For its re-release, Condensed French was updated with additional language support, ligatures, and OpenType alternates.
